Fishing for Heroes is a registered charity (1135355) which was founded in 2009. We are a nationwide charity based in Derby with the aim of helping forces personnel who are suffering from emotional issues after the horrors of active service.
‘What We Do’
We provide fully funded fly fishing courses and instruction as therapy for veterans and serving soldiers, seamen and airmen of the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) combat fatigue or other emotional issues due to active service.
Research (Rivers of Recovery programme carried out by the Universities of Utah, South Maine and Salt Lake City VA) has identified that fly fishing is an effective therapy for PTSD, and has shown that a short course of instruction can result in a 20% reduction in PTSD symptoms. We have found that beneficiaries who have been through our courses experience a real release and an increased sense of self worth, helping to enable them to turn their lives around and contribute to society once again.
Any veteran or serving individual from any of the three armed forces of either sex can apply for our help. Although current campaigns are foremost in people’s minds, personnel from any era or conflict are eligible to apply.
‘Give a man a fish and you feed him today; teach him to fish and he can feed himself forever’
In these times, along with other charities we have far more individuals in need of assistance than we are presently able to help. We are constantly looking for people and ideas to help raise funds.
